October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Breast cancer occurs when abnormal cells grow out of control in one or both breasts. They can invade nearby tissues and form a mass, called a malignant tumor. The cancer cells can spread (metastasize) to the lymph nodes and other parts of the body. Breast cancer can occur at any age, though it is most common in women older than 50.

Medical experts don’t recommend regular breast self-examinations. Studies show that self-exams don’t save women’s lives and that they can lead to unneeded tests, such as biopsies. But some experts believe that women should know how their breasts look and feel (breast self-awareness) so any breast changes can be reported to a doctor.
